What is Mesalamine?
Mesalamine is a derivative of salicylic acid. It works as an anti-inflammatory agent in treating ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. The suppository form is used to treat ulcerative proctitis (ulcerative rectal colitis).
How do 5-ASA suppositories work?
Mesalamine is believed to have a topical effect on the inflamed bowel. It works inside the rectum to help reduce bleeding, mucous, and bloody diarrhea caused by inflammation.
Always follow your doctor's instructions about how often and how long to use 5-ASA suppositories. The usual dose is one suppository (500mg) 2 times a day for 3-6 weeks.
