Avastin TM(Bevacizumab)
- AvastinTM became available in 2004 for treatment of colorectal cancer. Avastin is an antibody. Antibodies are molecules that are produced by our bodies that bind to other molecules such as those found on viruses or bacteria.
- AvastinTM has been shown, in two published articles, to benefit wet macular degeneration in a number of patients when injected into the eye.
- As of today, there are no significant complications from injecting AvastinTM into the eye that have been identified.
- AvastinTM for wet macular degeneration is considered an "off-label" use.
- Since it is injected into the eye, there are limited systemic side effects.
- Doctors are having pharmacies, like Sullivan's, divide vials of AvastinTM into pre-filled doses to be injected into the eye.
- "A potential advantage of AvastinTM over other therapies for wet AMD is that vision improvement can occur within 1 week of treatment," said Philip J. Rosenfeld, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the principal investigator of this Bascom Palmer clinical trial.
